What image formats can Virtual CD work with?

Virtual CD has its own image formats: FCD for virtual CDs up to Virtual CD v3, VC4 for virtual CDs in Virtual CD v4 and higher, VC6 and VC8 for special virtual CDs which are supported in Virtual CD v6 resp. v8 only. Other ISO conform image formats are supported in Virtual CD v4 and higher.

Virtual CD v3 creates images in its own ".FCD" format, and cannot work with images that have other formats (such as ISO, or CCD from CloneCD). To make an image with other file formats, you need to burn a CD of the desired image file first and use that CD to make the virtual CD.

Virtual CD v4 can convert the following file types to its own format:

Virtual CD v5:  Virtual CD v5 can work with all ISO conform uncompressed images without converting them first. VCD v5 creates a new VC4 and 000 file, so that the original ISO image is still available for other programs (e.g. burning software) to use. With the new ISO Search you can find these images. If you enter an asterisc (*), all unconverted ISO conform images will be displayed regardless of the extension.

Virtual CD v6 and higher directly supports ISO conform images without any conversion or additional Virtual CD specific files.

Additional formats can be searched in the advanced search (type "*.file extension"), but can only be displayed in case they are ISO conform.

Note: Images of audio CDs are not ISO conform and thus cannot be used by Virtual CD. Furthermore compressed and split images or images that contain special copy informationen cannot be supported. The extension (e.g. NRG for Nero images) does not necessarily reveal the adaptability for Virtual CD. In general, images that are not displayed by the Virtual CD searching program are not ISO conform, regardless of whether the extension itself is supported by Virtual CD.
